Mpho Moerane served as the treasurer of the African National Congress’s regional structure in Johannesburg. Moerane formerly served as the head of fundraising in the office of the regional treasurer.
Following Geoff Makhubo’s election as mayor of Johannesburg in December 2019, Mpho Moerane was appointed the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) responsible for environment and infrastructure services.
As MMC for environment and infrastructure services, Mpho Moerane launched the #KleenaJoburg campaign in Alexandra in January 2020 to encourage residents and stakeholders to clean up the environment.
Makhubo died from COVID-19 related complications in July 2021 and was replaced as mayor in August 2021 by Jolidee Matongo, who kept Moerane as MMC for environment and infrastructure services.
Matongo died in a car accident in September and the ANC chose Moerane as their preferred candidate to replace him as mayor. He was elected and sworn into office on 1 October 2021. He served until the local government elections scheduled for 1 November.
At the inaugural council meeting of the 2021–2026 term on 22 November 2021, Mpho Moerane was defeated by Mpho Phalatse in the election for mayor.
