Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting Victims

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place on 14th December 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, U.S. The accused was a 20-year-old Adam Lanza who shot and killed 27 people, including 20 children (eight boys and twelve girls) in the age group of 6 to 7 years old, six staff members (all female teachers) of the school, and his own mother at his home before leaving for the school. After the mass killing, Lanza shot himself in the head and committed suicide.

Sandy Hook Occurance of Events

Lanza, before going on the killing spree in the school, killed his own mother Nancy Lanza, 52, with a rifle at their home in Newtown by shooting her in her head. She had four gunshots when her body was recovered later by police.

Lanza then took his mother’s case and drove to the Sandy Hook Elementary school at around 9:35 am, armed with his mother’s rifle. He was first confronted by the school principal Dawn Hochsprung and the school psychologist Mary Sherlach, who were both shot dead by Lanza.

He then entered a first-grade classroom where a substitute teacher, Lauren Rousseau was hiding her students. She, along with the fifteen students in her class, was killed by Lanza. After that, he went to the next first-grade classroom and shot five of the children hiding there along with the class teacher, Victoria Leigh Soto, and another teacher, Anne Marie Murphy.

Several other students were safely and quietly sheltered by their teachers during the entire shooting and were later found safe by the police.

Sandy Hook Shooter’s Suicide

The shooter Lanza shot himself in the lower rear portion of his head with a pistol in Class 10 at around 9:40 am when the final or the last shot was heard by the police. Another pistol and a rifle were found beside him at the scene.

In a report issued in November 2014, it was revealed that Lanza had Asperger syndrome and had depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder as a teenager, which, however, did not lead to his crimes. It was his deteriorating mental health, combined with violence and access to deadly weapons that caused the entire scene.

Sandy Hook Police Response

The first call to the police emergency 911 was made at around 9:35 am after which the Newtown police were dispatched at 9:36 am and the Connecticut State Police (CSP) were dispatched at 9:37 am. Newtown police arrived at 9:39 am at the school street while CSP arrived at 9:46 am.

Both the police units mobilized the local police dog and police tactical units, a bomb squad, and a state police helicopter. The survivors were evacuated and the school was searched at least four times for other shooters. The deceased bodies were removed and the wounded patients were taken to the hospital.

Sandy Hook Aftermath Of The Shooting

After the massacre, the school was indefinitely closed as it remained a crime scene. The classes were resumed on 3rd January 2013, at Chalk Hill Middle School.

The school at that time was unused so desks and equipment were brought from Sandy Hook Elementary School and Chalk Hill was temporarily named Sandy Hook. A scholarship was created for the surviving children of the shooting.

On 10th May 2013, the existing Sandy Hook Elementary School was demolished to build a new school in its place. The new school, integrated in July 2016,  is on the site of the building where the shooting took place and was built with a state grant of around $50 million.

Sandy Hook Investigation

No suicide notes or any messages were recovered from the site related to the shooting. It was investigated if Lanza had been in an argument with four of the staff members at the school a day before the shooting, two of them being the school principal and the psychologist whom Lanza killed, the third being wounded and the fourth did not come to the school that day.

A large quantity of unused ammunition was also recovered from the school along with the weapons used by Lenza himself and one recovered from his car. Lanza’s body was tested for any alcohol or drugs, which were not found. Neither his autopsy showed any tumors or gross deformities in his brain.

Although Lanza had damaged his computer hard disk prior to the incident, the police believe that he had extensively researched earlier mass shootings, and suicide by gunshots. A gun safe and more than 1400 rounds of ammunition and other firearms were also recovered from his house.

One of Lanza’s former teachers stated that as a child, Lanza showed antisocial behavior, would rarely interact with other students, and was very much into writing about battles, destruction, and war.

Sandy Hook Perpetrator Adam Lanza’s Life Account

Sandy Hook Wiki

Sandy Hook Mass shooting perpetrator, Adam Peter Lanza was born on 22nd April 1992 in Exeter, New Hampshire, U.S. Since childhood, he lived with his mother, Nancy Lanza, his father, Peter Lanza, and his brother.

His mother was a gun enthusiast and owned at least a dozen firearms. She would take her two sons to a local shooting range where they learned to shoot.

Lanza first attended Sandy Hook Elementary School for about four and a half years. He then joined Newtown Middle School where frequent classroom changes caused him severe anxiety. He was even moved to another school, but he could not survive there as well.

He went to Newtown High School at the age of 14 but lacked social interaction with his classmates and teacher despite being an intelligent kid. When he turned 16, he started missing school very often, because of which he was home-schooled by his parents after which he earned a GED.

During his early childhood, Lanza showed signs of autism. He was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and OCD when he was in middle school.

During the later years of his life, he loved to remain isolated and spent most of his time playing online games, like World of Warcraft and others. He had even blocked his windows with black garbage bags to prevent the sunlight from coming in.

He was found to be obsessed with mass shootings, that took place previously in other schools or universities. He was not in contact with his father and his brother for almost two years before he died and even contacted his mother only by email at one point in time despite living under the same roof.
