Robert also pleaded guilty in March 1988 to the charges for his role in an illegal arms-fro-hostages deal. In February 1987, he tried to commit suicide by taking an overdose of Valium the day earlier he has to testify before the presidential commission investigating the Iran-Contra scheme.

McFarlane was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service and was ordered to pay a $20,000 fine. However, in 1992, he was pardoned by then-President George H.W. Bush along with five others.
