Atiku Abubakar has been picked as the candidate for the 2023 presidential elections, by his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Abubakar received 371 votes, thereby defeating his nearest rival Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who received 237 votes only.

Abubakar, while addressing the delegates of his party on 28th May 2022 during the Special convention in Abuja, Nigeria, said that he will restore unity and will take measures to deal with the security situation in the country.

Abubakar’s selection as one of the presidential candidates has agitated certain organizations that think the selection will negate the zoning principle in the PDP constitution.

Several interest groups are in the favor of the zoning of the presidency to the South to whom, Atiku’s presidency is like a gang-up by the North against the South. According to them, the power shift should take place only after the two-term tenure of Buhari.

SMBLF rejected Abubakar’s candidacy and told the people of Southern Nigeria, the Middle Belt, and the true lovers of peace and unity in the country, not to vote for him or any other Northern candidate in the 2023 presidential elections.

Atiku Abubakar is a Fulani Nigerian politician and businessman, known for serving as the Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, the first Nigerian leader after the end of the military rule in Nigeria.

He was born on 25th November 1946 in Jada, Adamawa State of Nigeria to Garba Abubakar, a Fulani trader, and a farmer, and Aisha Kande. He was enrolled in the Jada Primary School, Adamawa, at the age of 8, to complete his primary schooling. He was later admitted to Adamawa Provincial Secondary School.

He enrolled for Law Diploma at the Ahmadu Bello University Institute of Administration on a scholarship from the regional government. in 2021, Abubakar completed his master’s degree in International Relations at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Abubakar was appointed as the National Vice-Chairman of the Peoples Front of Nigeria in 1989. He also won a seat to represent his constituency at the 1989 Constituent Assembly. Abubakar was employed by the Nigeria Customs Service right after his graduation in 1969, where he worked for twenty years, becoming the Deputy Director. He retired in 1989.

In 1974, he started his real estate business in Yola, Nigeria, by building houses and then renting them. In 1981, he put up a maize and cotton farm near Yola which failed in 1986, after which, he ventured into trading as well.

While working as a Customs Officer at the Apapa Ports, Abubakar set up Nigeria Container Services (NICOTES), a logistics company along with an Italian businessman in Nigeria. The company, later on, became Intels Nigeria Limited, providing huge profits to him.

Apart from this, he opened up Adama Beverages Limited, a beverage manufacturing plant in Yola, an animal feed factory, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), the first American-style private university to be established in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 1993, he contested the SDP presidential primaries. In 1998, he joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and in May 1999, he became the Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo, the first Nigerian leader after the end of the military rule in Nigeria.

He also served as the vice president for the second term during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo. In the 2007 elections, Abubakar joined the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as their presidential candidate and stood in the third position.

After the elections, he returned to PDP, and in 2010, he contested the presidential elections of 2011 which he lost to President Jonathan. In 2014, he left PDP and became a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest the 2015 presidential election in which he got the third position.

In 2017, Abubakar exited from APC and returned to PDP after clearing on his issues with the latter. In 2018, he again contested the presidential election but lost to Buhari.
